How to cook eggs

Cooking eggs is versatile, and the method you choose depends on taste, texture, and intended use. Here’s a comprehensive guide to the most common ways:

1. Boiled Eggs

  • Soft-Boiled:

    • Boil water, add eggs, cook 4–6 minutes.

    • Yolk is runny, whites are set.

  • Medium-Boiled:

    • Cook 7–9 minutes; yolk slightly soft, mostly set.

  • Hard-Boiled:

    • Cook 10–12 minutes; yolk fully cooked.

  • Tip: Place eggs in ice water after cooking to stop cooking and make peeling easier.

2. Scrambled Eggs

  • Beat eggs with a pinch of salt and optional milk or cream.

  • Heat butter or oil in a pan over medium heat.

  • Pour eggs in, stir gently until softly set.

  • Remove from heat slightly before fully cooked for creamy texture.

3. Fried Eggs

  • Heat a small amount of butter or oil in a pan.

  • Sunny-side up: Cook until whites are set, yolk remains runny.

  • Over-easy / Over-medium / Over-hard: Flip gently, cook to desired yolk consistency.

4. Poached Eggs

  • Bring water with a splash of vinegar to a gentle simmer.

  • Crack egg into a small bowl, then slide into water.

  • Cook 3–4 minutes for runny yolk, 5 minutes for firmer yolk.

  • Remove with a slotted spoon.

5. Omelette

  • Beat eggs with salt, pepper, and optional milk.

  • Pour into heated pan with butter or oil.

  • Add fillings (cheese, veggies, herbs) as eggs set.

  • Fold and cook briefly until fully set.

6. Tips for Perfect Eggs

  • Fresh eggs work best for poaching and frying.

  • Low to medium heat prevents overcooking and rubbery texture.

  • Season lightly during cooking or after, depending on taste.

  • Experiment with herbs, spices, cheese, or vegetables to vary flavor.
