Pastrami sandwich
A classic pastrami sandwich is always a hit! The smoky, salty pastrami paired with tangy mustard, pickles, and rye bread is a combination that never gets old. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own delicious pastrami sandwich.
Classic Pastrami Sandwich
Ingredients:
-
1 lb (450 g) pastrami, thinly sliced
-
4 slices rye bread (or your preferred bread)
-
2-3 tbsp yellow mustard (or Dijon mustard, if preferred)
-
4-6 slices of dill pickles (or pickle chips)
-
1/4 cup Swiss cheese (optional, but adds great flavor)
-
1 tbsp butter (optional, for toasting the bread)
-
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
-
Prepare the bread: If you prefer a toasted sandwich, spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Toast the bread in a skillet or on a griddle over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. If you like it un-toasted, you can skip this step and go straight to assembling.
-
Prepare the pastrami: Warm up the pastrami by placing it in a skillet over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally. You want it heated through, but not overcooked.
-
Assemble the sandwich: On one slice of rye bread, spread a generous layer of mustard. Layer the warm pastrami on top, piling it high! If you're using Swiss cheese, place a slice or two on top of the pastrami.
-
Add pickles: Layer the dill pickle slices on top of the pastrami (and cheese, if you used it). If you like your sandwich extra tangy, you can also add a bit of the pickle juice to the sandwich.
-
Top and serve: Place the second slice of rye bread on top, mustard side down, and press gently to compact the sandwich.
-
Slice and enjoy: Slice your sandwich in half (or quarters if you’re feeling fancy) and serve immediately. You can serve it with some extra pickles or chips on the side!
Optional Variations:
-
For extra richness, you can melt the Swiss cheese on top of the pastrami before adding the pickles.
-
Coleslaw: Some people love to add coleslaw to the pastrami sandwich for extra crunch and creaminess.
-
Sauerkraut: For a more traditional deli-style twist, you can add a bit of sauerkraut for a tangy bite.
This sandwich is simple but packed with flavor.
