Ketchup spaghetti

Ketchup spaghetti, also known as "Spaghetti al Ketchup", is a surprisingly popular dish in some parts of the world, particularly in Japan, where it's a quick and comfort food. It's a simple, sweet, and tangy dish that's perfect for when you're in the mood for something quick, easy, and satisfying.

Here's how you can make it:

Ketchup Spaghetti

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz (225 g) spaghetti (or any pasta you prefer)

  • 1/2 cup ketchup

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped

  • 1/4 cup bell pepper (optional), chopped

  • 1/2 cup cooked chicken, ham, or sausage (optional)

  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

  • Fresh basil or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions:

  1. Cook the spaghetti: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving a bit of the pasta cooking water.

  2. Prepare the sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions (and bell peppers, if using) and sauté until softened and slightly caramelized, about 3-5 minutes. If you're adding any meat, such as cooked chicken, ham, or sausage, add it now and cook until heated through.

  3. Add ketchup and seasoning: Stir in the ketchup and garlic powder (if using), mixing well. If the sauce is too thick, add a tablespoon of the reserved pasta water to help loosen it up. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the sauce simmer for a couple of minutes.

  4. Combine pasta and sauce: Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet, tossing to coat the pasta in the ketchup sauce. If needed, add more pasta water to ensure the pasta is well-coated.

  5. Serve: Plate the spaghetti and top with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh herbs like basil or parsley, if desired.

Optional Add-ins:

  • Vegetables: You can throw in some peas, corn, or mushrooms for extra texture and flavor.

  • Spices: A pinch of red pepper flakes or black pepper can add a little heat to the dish.

  • Protein: If you want to make it more filling, you could add grilled chicken or shrimp.

It’s a quick and fun twist on traditional spaghetti, and the ketchup gives it a unique flavor that's tangy and slightly sweet.
