How to use an oven to bake a cake
Baking a cake in an oven is quite simple once you know the basic sequence.
🍰 How to bake a cake in an oven
1. Preheat the oven
- Set the oven to 175°C (350°F).
- Let it preheat for about 10–15 minutes.
- Use conventional heat (top + bottom) if your oven has that setting.
- If using a fan/convection oven, use about 160°C (320°F).
2. Prepare your cake pan
- Grease the pan with butter or oil.
- Dust lightly with flour, or line the bottom with baking paper.
- Pour in your prepared cake batter, filling the pan about ⅔ full.
3. Put the cake in the oven
- Place the pan on the middle rack.
- Close the oven door gently.
- Bake according to the recipe, usually 25–45 minutes, depending on the size and type of cake.
4. Don't open the oven too early
Try not to open the door during the first 20 minutes, because the sudden temperature drop can cause the cake to collapse.
5. Test for doneness
Insert a wooden toothpick or skewer into the center.
- Clean or with a few dry crumbs: done.
- Wet batter: bake for another 5–10 minutes and test again.
You can also gently press the center—it should spring back.
6. Cool the cake
- Remove it from the oven.
- Let it sit in the pan for about 10–15 minutes.
- Then carefully remove it and let it cool completely on a rack before frosting or cutting.
🔥 Basic oven rule
Preheat → middle rack → bake → don't disturb early → toothpick test → cool.
For a first cake, a simple vanilla cake is particularly good because you can learn how your oven behaves without having to manage complicated ingredients.
