First, which flute do you have? There are different kinds, and the playing technique depends on which one you're learning.

1. Learn to make a sound

Hold the head joint(the part with the mouth hole) against your lower lip. Make a small opening between your lips and blow gently across the hole, as if blowing across the top of a bottle. Don't blow directly into it.

2. Position your body

Stand or sit upright, relax your shoulders, and keep the flute approximately horizontal to your right. Avoid squeezing your lips or gripping the instrument tightly.

3. Learn the fingerings

Once you can produce a steady sound, learn the basic notes one at a time. The keys open and close holes to change the pitch.

4. Play your first melody

Start with short notes and simple tunes. Practice for 10–15 minutes daily rather than forcing long sessions before your lips and breathing adjust.

Your first 10-minute practice session

  • 2 minutes: Relax your shoulders and practice slow, controlled breathing.

  • 3 minutes: Try to produce a clear, steady note.

  • 3 minutes: Repeat short notes, keeping the sound consistent.

  • 2 minutes: Try a simple melody once you can produce a note reliably.

Important: If you don't make a sound immediately on a transverse flute, that's normal. Finding the right angle of air takes practice.
