Cranberry compote
🍒 Cranberry Compote
Cranberry compote is a simple sweet-tart sauce made by simmering cranberries with sugar and a little liquid. It's excellent with pancakes, yogurt, oatmeal, cheesecake, ice cream, roast poultry, or cheese.
Ingredients
- 300 g fresh or frozen cranberries
- 100–150 g sugar, to taste
- 120 ml water or orange juice
- 1 tsp orange zest
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- Optional: cinnamon, vanilla, or a pinch of salt
Method
- Put the cranberries, sugar, and water/orange juice in a saucepan.
- Bring to a gentle boil.
- Reduce the heat and simmer for 8–12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- The berries will burst and the mixture will thicken.
- Stir in orange zest and lemon juice.
- Taste and adjust the sweetness.
- Let it cool—it will become noticeably thicker.
For a richer version: add a small knob of butter at the end.
For a Lebanese/Mediterranean twist: use orange juice, cinnamon, and a little rose water or orange-blossom water. Just a few drops are enough.
