How to get a camera

 📷 If you want to get into photography, you don't need to spend a fortune immediately.

For a first camera, I'd look at three routes:

  1. Used camera — best value
    • A used Canon, Sony, Nikon, or Fujifilm can give you much more camera for your money.
    • Something like a Sony a6000/a6100, Canon EOS R100, or an older Nikon/Fujifilm can be an excellent starting point.
    • Buying used can be especially attractive if you're not sure yet how seriously you'll pursue photography.
  2. New beginner mirrorless — my recommendation
    • The Canon EOS R50 is currently one of the strongest beginner choices: compact, relatively simple to operate, good autofocus, and a 24.2MP APS-C sensor.
    • The Canon EOS R100 is the cheaper, simpler option.
    • If you like beautiful colors and a more artistic/retro feel, consider Fujifilm X-M5.
  3. Compact point-and-shoot — easiest
    • If you want something you can simply put in your bag and photograph with, a compact camera makes a lot of sense.
    • Compact cameras are actually having something of a resurgence because people value portability and simplicity.

What I'd do in your situation

Since you've recently been interested in photography, I wouldn't jump straight to a $2,000+ professional setup. I'd aim for:

Camera + basic kit lens + SD card + spare battery = your whole setup.

And I'd seriously consider buying used. You can learn photography first and upgrade later when you know what you actually want.
