Tuning a guitar
🎸 Let’s go step by step for tuning a standard 6-string guitar. Standard tuning is:
E – A – D – G – B – e
(from the thickest string to the thinnest):
-
6th string – E (low)
-
5th string – A
-
4th string – D
-
3rd string – G
-
2nd string – B
-
1st string – e (high)
Methods to Tune a Guitar
1. Using a Tuner (easiest & most accurate)
-
Clip-on tuners, phone apps, or pedal tuners work.
-
Play each string and adjust the tuning peg until the tuner shows the correct note.
2. Tuning by Ear (relative tuning)
-
Tune the 6th string (E) first (you can use a piano, pitch pipe, or another reference).
-
Press the 5th fret of the 6th string (E) → this note is A → tune 5th string to match.
-
Press 5th fret of 5th string (A) → D → tune 4th string.
-
Press 5th fret of 4th string (D) → G → tune 3rd string.
-
Press 4th fret of 3rd string (G) → B → tune 2nd string.
-
Press 5th fret of 2nd string (B) → E → tune 1st string.
💡 Tips
-
Tune slowly and gently turn the pegs.
-
Stretch new strings slightly after tuning—they can go flat quickly at first.
-
Always tune up to the note rather than down to avoid slipping.
