Flute

It’s a woodwind instrument that makes sound when you blow air across the mouthpiece (the embouchure hole), instead of using a reed like a clarinet or saxophone. The air vibrates inside the tube, and by covering and uncovering the keys, you change the pitch.

Quick Facts About the Flute

  • Usually made of metal (silver, nickel, or even gold), though student flutes can be nickel-plated.

  • Standard concert flute is pitched in C.

  • It has three main parts:

    1. Headjoint – where you blow

    2. Body – with most of the keys

    3. Footjoint – the shorter end with a few keys

  • The flute has no reed—you make the sound by blowing correctly.

Beginner Tips

  • Posture: Sit or stand straight, shoulders relaxed.

  • Hand position: Left hand on top keys, right hand on bottom keys.

  • Embouchure: Make a small, focused hole with your lips and blow across the tone hole.

  • Easy notes to start: B, A, G (using just the left-hand fingers)

💡 Fun fact: The flute is one of the oldest instruments in the world, with versions dating back over 40,000 years!
