Why cats snooze

Cats snooze a lot—sometimes 12–16 hours a day, even up to 20!—and there are a few reasons behind their famous sleepiness:

1. Energy Conservation

  • Cats are natural predators. In the wild, hunting takes short bursts of intense energy.

  • Sleeping helps them conserve energy for stalking, pouncing, and sprinting.

2. Natural Hunting Instinct

  • Even domestic cats retain the instinct to hunt.

  • Naps mimic the rest periods wild cats would take between hunts.

3. Brain and Body Recovery

  • Sleep helps muscles recover and supports overall health.

  • Cats, especially kittens and seniors, need sleep to grow and repair their bodies.

4. Safety and Comfort

  • Cats feel safest in cozy, quiet spots.

  • Sleeping in these places allows them to relax fully without stress.

5. Mental Stimulation

  • Cats sleep to process their experiences, like hunting practice or playing.

  • Dreams may help them rehearse hunting or social behaviors.

Fun fact: Cats have two main types of sleep:

  1. Light sleep – eyes half-closed, ready to wake and pounce.

  2. Deep sleep (REM) – dreaming, twitching paws, whiskers moving.
