Why cats snooze
Cats snooze a lot—sometimes 12–16 hours a day, even up to 20!—and there are a few reasons behind their famous sleepiness:
1. Energy Conservation
-
Cats are natural predators. In the wild, hunting takes short bursts of intense energy.
-
Sleeping helps them conserve energy for stalking, pouncing, and sprinting.
2. Natural Hunting Instinct
-
Even domestic cats retain the instinct to hunt.
-
Naps mimic the rest periods wild cats would take between hunts.
3. Brain and Body Recovery
-
Sleep helps muscles recover and supports overall health.
-
Cats, especially kittens and seniors, need sleep to grow and repair their bodies.
4. Safety and Comfort
-
Cats feel safest in cozy, quiet spots.
-
Sleeping in these places allows them to relax fully without stress.
5. Mental Stimulation
-
Cats sleep to process their experiences, like hunting practice or playing.
-
Dreams may help them rehearse hunting or social behaviors.
Fun fact: Cats have two main types of sleep:
-
Light sleep – eyes half-closed, ready to wake and pounce.
-
Deep sleep (REM) – dreaming, twitching paws, whiskers moving.
