How to brew beer at home

Brewing beer at home is a fun (and ancient) DIY project. Here’s a simple beginner guide to get you started with a basic homebrew beer using simple tools and ingredients.

🍺 BASIC OVERVIEW: 5 Steps to Brew Beer

  1. Prepare Equipment & Ingredients

  2. Brew the Wort (unfermented beer)

  3. Cool & Transfer to Fermenter

  4. Ferment

  5. Bottle & Carbonate

🔧 BASIC EQUIPMENT YOU NEED

  • Large pot (20+ liters ideal)

  • Fermentation bucket with airlock

  • Sanitizer (very important)

  • Thermometer

  • Siphon hose

  • Bottles + caps or swing tops

  • Bottle capper

  • Optional: Hydrometer (to measure alcohol)

You can buy a homebrew starter kit from online stores or a brewing shop.

🧪 BASIC INGREDIENTS (for ~20 liters)

  • Malted barley extract (or crushed malt if going all-grain)

  • Hops (for bitterness and aroma)

  • Brewing yeast

  • Clean water

  • Optional: sugar, spices, fruit, etc.

🍯 STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

🔥 1. Brew the Wort

  • Boil 12–15 liters of water in your pot.

  • Add malt extract and stir.

  • Add hops in stages (bittering first, aroma later).

  • Simmer for 60 minutes.

📝 Optional: Add orange peel, coriander, or honey for flavor.

❄️ 2. Cool the Wort

  • Cool it quickly using:

    • An ice bath

    • A wort chiller

  • Bring it to below 25°C before adding yeast (or you’ll kill it).

🍾 3. Ferment

  • Transfer wort to sanitized fermenter.

  • Add yeast (“pitching the yeast”).

  • Seal the lid and insert the airlock.

  • Let it sit in a dark, cool place (18–24°C) for 7–14 days.

Bubbles in the airlock = fermentation happening!

🧪 4. Optional: Second Fermentation

  • You can transfer beer to another bucket to settle out the yeast and improve clarity (optional for beginners).

🍾 5. Bottle and Carbonate

  • Sanitize bottles.

  • Add priming sugar (~5g per liter) to the beer (or add a bit directly into each bottle).

  • Fill bottles, seal, and store at room temp for 1–2 weeks.

  • Chill and enjoy 🍻

💡 Tips

  • Cleanliness is critical – sanitize everything that touches your beer.

  • Use glass or food-grade plastic only.

  • If beer smells weird, don’t drink it.

  • Try a beer kit for your first time—easier and less risk.
